Debate Day

Frome College Year 9 and Year 10 students welcomed Years 8s from two of our feeder schools to an event which they had been looking forward to – Debate Day.

Having practised, prepared and honed their debating skills at the Thursday after school debate club meets, as well as participating in the Rotary Club’s Youth Speaks competition, our Year 9s and 10s were all set to familiarise Oakfield and Avanti students with the techniques and strategies they would need to excel at this brain-stretching exercise.

Needless to say our younger friends distinguished themselves very quickly, as they assimilated and utilised techniques to win through the early heats at the start of the day. There was much laughter and mirth as many of the Year 8s showed off their skills, discussing such topics as the ethics of using artificial intelligence in schools, animal testing , and in our final- ‘Why everyone should watch ‘Love Island’ to learn about relationships’.

The winning mixed team comprised of Tallis from Avanti, Cyprian M, and Iris B. A great time was had by all.

My son is very happy so far and is responding well to the new and more mature learning environment.
