Library
The library is a vibrant part of our school, housed in the oldest part of the campus in Northcote house. The library has a full time librarian and many student volunteers. The library is often a haven for students who want to escape the general hubbub of the playground and it is open every lunch and break time.
Paper books, audio and eBooks
We stock a range of reading material suitable for young adults of all reading ages and abilities.
The library boasts over 2500 physical books ranging from Horror and Fantasy to Diversity and Romance. We always try to keep our finger on the pulse of new and upcoming young adult authors and collaborate with the local bookseller, Hunting Raven Bookshop who often introduce new authors to our students.
All students who are enrolled at Frome College have access to a free and comprehensive online library with access to more than 3700 audio and eBooks. These are updated regularly to offer our students the most up to date and popular books suitable for their age range. Audio and eBooks can be accessed through any device.

Extra curricular clubs and activities
The library is home to many exciting clubs and activities throughout the school year. We host a book club each week, a murder mystery event as well as many occasions to ‘meet the author’ - we even have our own podcast - The BookShelf BFFs’. The BookShelf BFFs have an exciting opportunity to meet and interview authors and give their opinions on their favourite books.
The library also organises and hosts the Frome College entries in the nationwide competition; Poetry by Heart. In 2025 we are very proud to have a finalist who will travel to The Globe to compete to be the national champion. 587 schools entered with 120,000 entrants - this is no small undertaking for our school and we are extremely proud of all our competitors.
Dyslexia support
The library stocks a range of dyslexia friendly reading material to help students engage with reading even if it feels like a challenge. We appreciate that reading for dyslexic students can take away the pleasure that books bring and therefore,we always recommend that students access audio books where possible and make use of the coloured filters and text change function in eBooks. We also offer a range of graphic novels and magazines. After all, all reading is reading. The most important thing about any reading material is simply that you enjoy it.
Student librarians
There are many opportunities to volunteer in the library. We ask student volunteers to help at and promote events, run book fairs and generally support our librarian Mrs Owsley. We support students working towards their DofE awards as well as students who find the library a cool place to hang out. Student librarians also organise their own fundraising events to raise money for new books and materials to support the bookclub and the BookShelf BFFs.
Literacy
The library is also home to the varied and fun literacy interventions that we encourage many students to attend. We know that students learn in different ways and at different times and we want all of our students to leave with a reading ability that matches their aspirations. For some, the road to competent literacy is a tricky one and we understand that some students need a supportive place and person to help them along the journey. We offer reading support, English as a second language lessons with a trained TEFL teacher and the market leader in Literacy interventions; Lexonik. Lexonik is delivered by trained and skilled individuals who understand the literacy needs of our students and on average can improve a child’s reading age by 27 months.
