Great Big Green Week

Frome Town Council hosted various events to mark the Great Big Green Week between the 18th and 26th September, to help tackle climate change and promote green spaces. Frome College got involved in activities, workshops and performances in groups and as part of the community.

Plastic Free Tea in the Park

We performed at Plastic Free Tea in Victoria Park to kick the week off. Our musical students played songs such as The Climb and Northern Downpour on the park’s bandstand.

Great Big Green Week

We also held many activities on site - here’s what the College got up to during the week...

Produced green-themed poetry with Years 9, 10 and 12, which is on exhibition at the Call For Art exhibition at the town hall.

Modern Foreign Languages

Performed eco-themed songs and activities with Years 9-11.

Created a life-size ‘flower man’ sculpture from recycled paper, which is now on display in the Art Exhibition in room A3. An art workshop was also held, the artwork of which went on to be displayed in the Town Hall.

Held a workshop on using sustainable textiles, to highlight the issues surrounding fast fashion and textile waste. Students made roses out of recycled denim, as seen in the Call For Art exhibition in the Town Hall.

Lead climate-themed lessons/workshops with all year groups. A display has gone up in Geography.

Held workshops on natural cosmetics and owl pellet dissection. Our keen scientists had a go at dissecting owl regurgitations to see what they’d been eating!

Visiting organisations

We also welcomed guests who came in to teach our students. Alex from Frome’s Missing Links led a workshop on bike maintenance and fixing a puncture, whereas Frome Medical Practice’s ‘Green and Healthy Futures’ project (in connection with the University of Plymouth) trained our lower school Eco Council to be Green Community Connectors.
