Yet again the students of Frome College deserve praise and reward for their hard work in achieving a fantastic set of GCSCE and BTEC results. This continues to reflect the continuous improvement at the school since 2012.

This year English and Mathematics GCSEs have moved to new harder syllabi and grading systems which make previous comparisons difficult. A new ‘Grade 4’ is considered equivalent to an old C Grade, which gives some kind of benchmark. In English, 74% of students achieved a Grade 4 (C) or higher which is the best ever with 60% achieving Grade 5 or higher. This represents an excellent outcome for the effort that has been put into literacy at the College.

GCSE Mathematics saw major changes in its content with A Level material being pushed into the GCSE syllabus for the first time. However, the Maths Faculty and its students rose to the challenge and 67% of students achieved a Grade 4 or higher, which is comparable to last year on the old Maths course. Nearly a third of all students achieved the new higher Grades of 6 to 9 in both English and Maths.

63% of students achieved a Grade 4 (C) in both English and Mathematics, which is the best ever in the history of the College and represents a key measure by which the College is judged.

The government introduced the new super ‘Grade 9’ into English and Mathematics this year, which is equivalent to an A** or higher. Only a tiny proportion of the student population nationwide will be awarded this grade. In English Language / Literature eight Grade 9s were achieved and in Maths five were achieved.

The curriculum is wide at Frome College and there are a host of other subjects which all deserve attention. To name but a few: Computer Science 78% (A*-C) with 26% at A* and 37% at A*/A; History just under 70% (A*-C) with 32% A*/A; Religious Studies 100% (A* - C) with 43% at A*/A; Photography 91%(A*-C) with 28% A*/A; Drama 95% (A*-C) with 53% at A; Music 83% (A*-C) with 40% A*/A; Textiles 88% (A*-C) with 63% A*/A; French 72% (A*-C) with 20% A*/A.

Other subjects to mention include German 88% (A*-C); Art 75% (A*-C); Media 88% (A*-C); PE GCSE 74%(A*-C); Sport BTEC 92% (A*-C); Business Studies 96% (A*-C); Child Care 85% (A*-C); and Dance 89% (A*-C).

Frome College is proud to be a completely comprehensive school serving all children in the Frome and surrounding area without selection or prejudice. All students achieved recognised official qualifications. The College has one of the lowest exclusion records in Somerset and works very hard for children of all abilities and backgrounds. The indicative ‘Progress 8 score’ is a positive 0.12. This basically means that over eight subjects studied, the College is adding good value to each student, using their Year 6 (SATs) as a baseline.

There were many high performing students who, among their grades, achieved:

  • 5 A*/As: Holly Davis, Rosie Le Lohe Attwell, Sophie Smith, Anna Snelgrove, Cordelia Tarbrooke, Masie Cloke, Kai Hayes Stone, Harry Hight, Chloe Hughes, Jordan McMahon, James Porter, Sophie Smith

  • This is a very high number of top achieving students. However, there are many other students who achieved excellent results. There are also students who made significant progress whilst at the College who came from a lower academic base or have difficult personal circumstances. We are very proud of all of our students and their achievements and wish them well for their next chosen pathway.

Our congratulations go to all of our students for their wonderful achievements and to all of the teachers and staff at Frome College for their dedication.

    Statement from Gavin Ball, Principal:
